Classroom Update

Hello Room 211 Families!

Below is a quick update on what we’ve been learning in class lately:

In literacy, we are now on our 4th cycle of the alphabet.  The order of this cycle is based on the frequency letters are found in the English language.  Letters that appear the least are introduced first, followed by the most common letters, and then vowels.  At the end of this cycle, your child will be bringing home a workbook with completed activities.

During our Really Great Reading lessons, we have been Peeling the Sound.  This is an activity where we isolate the first sound in a word.  For example, we peel the /g/ sound from the word goat.  We have also played Mystery Bag where we guess what’s in the bag when given an onset and rime to blend together.  For example, /sh/ + /eep/… what’s in the bag?  It’s a SHEEP!  These activities are continuing to build strong phonological awareness skills that contribute to solid foundational reading skills!

Our last nursery rhyme was Row, Row, Row Your Boat and we are now working on Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.  As usual, we are singing and learning hand motions, sequencing the rhyme, and creating a class book as a group.   This nursery rhyme is a class favorite as many were already familiar with the tune!

In math, we are wrapping up our sorting unit.  We have sorted items by color, size, and shape.  Here are links to Boom Cards that will work for the next two weeks to practice sorting with your child at home:

Sort by Shape:  https://boom.cards/fastplay/twsr

In Motor Language Group, Ms. Burd (SLP) and Ms. Danielle (OT) have been making snowmen with the class!  It’s been a very fun, and cold, experience to build and dress a snowman together.  Not only are students building their language and fine motor skills, but through these high-sensory activities, we are practicing taking turns with our peers and waiting.  Students have multiple opportunities to participate as activities are usually repeated for two weeks in a row.

Reminder that second winter break is coming up.  There is no school from February 19th – 23rd.

Please check out the latest photos that have been uploaded over the last couple of weeks!

Take good care,

Jaime
