Classroom Update

Hello Room 211 Families,

I hope everyone has settled into their new fall routine.  The weather is changing and the holidays are fast approaching!

Here is an update on what your child has been up to while at school!

Our new theme is Fall Fun!  In Motor Language Group (MLG), we’ve been making Turkey soup and working on the preposition ‘in.’  In our soup, we put in pizza, pretzels, tomatoes, celery, eggs, and more.  Yum!

In literacy, we’ve been learning to play a word game called Peel the Sound.  This is helping to strengthen our phonological awareness skills.  Students are shown a picture of a familiar object and we isolate the initial sound.  For example, when shown a picture of a rainbow, we say, “rainbow /r/  /r/  /r/  rainbow.”  We also select an “r” from a field of three to connect the phoneme (individual speech sound) to the grapheme (letter that represents the speech sound).

Try this at home with the following words: popcorn, cat, ten, and moon

We are continuing to work on the second cycle of the alphabet with an emphasis on letter formation.  Please feel free to have your child write over their completed worksheets for additional practice with you at home.  We call this rainbow writing where students select another color to trace over their first attempt.

In Math, students are learning to compare lengths and heights.  We’ve compared lengths of ribbons and trains.  We’ve also compared heights of block towers and unifix cube towers.  Vocabulary includes tall/taller, short/shorter, long/longer.  This video, complete with the hand movements, was a favorite last week:  https://youtu.be/pe7nVxkqSmI?si=ZRQ_HWxN8xp6bXt1  Enjoy!

Social Emotional Learning continues to target our feelings.  We are learning to understand our feelings by labeling them as well as learning about self-control and how to stay calm.  We’ve tried animal yoga and superhero yoga as strategies to help regulate our bodies.
