Classroom Update

Hello Room 211 Families!

Below is a brief recap of what we’ve been up to recently:

As we approach Halloween, we are saying goodbye to Hey, Diddle Diddle and are introducing The Itsy Bitsy Spider.  We will be sequencing, rhyming, and singing about a creepy crawly spider.  Check out this YouTube link:  https://youtu.be/6wBdjLMM7Ns?si=caGkJForXqbeGxm3

In Literacy, we are continuing with Heggerty.  To strengthen your child’s phonological awareness skills, try these familiar rhyming words: box/fox, key/bee, bug/mug, or pan/man.  Next, work to build your child’s language awareness.  Count out the number of words in these sentences by clapping each word:

“I see the spider.”  (4)

“Do you see the web?”  (5)

“There is a big bug on me.” (7)

With Really Great Reading, we are learning the following foundational skills and vocabulary:

Directionality and order (left to right, one to one)

First/next/last

Before and after

Part and whole

Beginning, middle, and end

Above and below

We are well into the second cycle of the alphabet.  Student workbooks were put on hold.  Instead, we have been focusing on letter formation with our Handwriting Without Tears worksheets.

In Math, we wrapped up our unit on describing positions.  We learned in front of, behind, above, below, next to, and between.  Our new unit will focus on describing and comparing lengths and heights.  We will continue with a lot of hands-on learning paired with practice worksheets.  The new family letter will be sent home later this week.

In our most recent Motor Language Groups, we made Halloween masks with Ms. Burd and Ms. Danielle!  Students were able to choose between a cat, pumpkin, ghost, or owl.  We also practiced trick-or-treating by knocking, saying “trick-or-treat,” and “thank you!”

Finally, we started a new social emotional unit that focuses on self-awareness.   We have been learning how to recognize feelings/thoughts and how they impact the way we behave.
