Classroom Update

Hello Room 211 Families!

The 2023-2024 school year is off to a great start!  We have spent every day practicing classroom routines in order to set us up for continued success this year.  During our transitions throughout the building, we walk with eyes watching, ears listening, voices quiet, and bodies calm.  We have been complimented on our line by others who see us in the hallway!

Our literacy instruction is underway.  We are primarily focusing on phonological awareness skills through the use of Nursery Rhymes.  We started with The Wheels on the Bus and have now moved to I’m a Little Teapot.  The class is enjoying the songs and sensory activities all while strengthening their foundational reading skills.  We have also been working on phonemic awareness with Letter of the Day activities.  We are in our first of six cycles of alphabet knowledge instruction.  This cycle focuses on the letters that are in students’ names.  We work on letter name identification, letter sound identification, recognizing the letter in print, and producing the letter form.

In Math, we are learning how to describe positions.  A family letter was sent home this week outlining the first lesson.  We are focusing on words like on, under, next to, and in front of.  Please try to incorporate these same words at home.  For example, you can say, “I put the bowl on the plate,” then ask your child to help you set the table by putting the spoon next to the plate.

All therapies are well underway with program staff collaborating to meet every student where they are at.

We are wrapping up Safety Week today but will continue to practice our drills throughout the year.  If you haven’t already, please return your child’s Emergency Kit with snacks they like to eat.  These baggies are returned at the end of the year if not they are not used (fingers crossed they won’t be!).

Thank you so much for partnering with me for a great year ahead! Don’t forget to check out the photos that have been added (password sent via email).

Take care,

Jaime
