November Updates

Hello!

First, I want to reiterate the importance of keeping your child home if they are not feeling well.  We have had a substantial number of friends absent over the last two weeks.  The flu, as well as colds, coughs, and other contagious germs are everywhere right now.  Please keep your child home to rest and recover whenever they are ill.  Program staff report all symptoms to the health room where it is them decided if your child can stay at school or not.  Thank you for answering calls from the office and helping to keep everyone in class healthy!

With the excitement of Halloween winding down, we wrapped up our final pumpkin-themed projects in class.  Hopefully they made it home safely in backpacks as well as the sign in sheets and vocabulary mats from Motor Language Group.  Most recently in the group, we made “turkey soup” with Ms. Joy and Ms. Burd (see uploaded photos).  Using bowls of water and large spoons, everyone added plastic play food to their bowl and stirred the soup until it was practically ready to eat!

It’s been great reading Halloween and fall stories – looking for letters, sounds, and targeted words within sentences.  To improve our reading and writing skills, we have been paying close attention to words within sentences and finding pictures that match the meaning.  We will continue to read repetitive texts with decodable CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant words such as dog, big, sat, etc.) and sight words (words that do not follow phonics patterns such as the, we, my, etc.) as we build reading stamina and confidence!

In math, we continue to practice counting out sets to match numerals.  Learning to quantify numbers is helping everyone build a strong foundation for math skills such as addition and subtraction.  We will continue to work on this skill all year in order to give numbers meaning.  Right now, our target numbers are 3 and 4.  We’ve added worksheets to the math rotation in addition to all the hands-on practice we get with manipulatives and other math tools.
