Welcome to a New School Year!

Dear Room 211 families,

Welcome to the 2021-2022 school year at Challenger Elementary!

I am very excited to welcome everyone to our new classroom, Room 211!  My name is Jaime Mallamo and I will be one of your child’s teachers this school year.  School starts next week, and everyone is hard at work preparing for a great year ahead.  I want to share the following information in preparation for next week:

Meet the Teacher is scheduled for Monday, August 30th from 10:00am – 11:00am.  Our class will be meeting on the patio outside of our new classroom.  Please look for a sign near the flagpole directing you to the entrance gate.  Parents are able to join and it’s a great time to drop off some of the requested school items.  I’m hoping to have program staff joining us who will be able to escort your child to their general education classroom.  At this time, parents are not allowed in the school building.  Thank you for your understanding of District protocols.

Our first-grade friends will be starting school on Tuesday, August 31st.  Kindergarteners will start later in the week on Friday, September 3rd (after your Family Connection meeting with our partner Kindergarten General Education teacher).  There is no school for student and staff on Monday, September 6th, in observance of Labor Day.

Just like last year, a school lunch will be provided for free each day.  Although I do not have a menu yet, please let me know if this is something you’re interested in for your child.   You can request a school lunch at any point in the year.

The following items will be needed at school – PLEASE LABEL EVERYTHING with your child’s name:

-Provide at least two clean masks for your child each day.

-Provide snacks and a water bottle, daily.

-Send in any toileting supplies that are necessary for your child (diapers, pull-ups, wipes, etc).  These items will be stored in the classroom.

-Send your child with a change of clothing that will remain at school (in case of a toilet, food or weather-related accident).

-Send your child with their fully-charged iPad, PECS book or core book, if applicable, to school each day.

-Finally, please avoid sending toys to school.

I do not have bus route information at the moment.  Please reach out directly to our Transportation department for route numbers and pick-up/drop-off times if you still need that information.  If you have decided to drive your child to and/or from school, please let me know.  For those driving, you will have to park and walk your child across the front crosswalk to meet our class outside each morning.

I know this has been a lot of information all at once.  I will continue to communicate often and welcome questions you may have.  Again, welcome to a new school year at Challenger – I’m looking forward to partnering with each family and hopefully meeting everyone Monday morning!

Have a great night,
